Public policy can play a powerful role in making our society more just. And it can help nonprofit organizations make important advances that create lasting, positive change.
Board members can serve as powerful champions for our missions, using a combination of passion and influence that can powerfully accelerate your organization’s voice.
Learn how advocacy made a difference for nonprofit organizations that committed to standing for their missions.
Stand for Your Mission is designed to unleash the power of the nonprofit sector through advocacy. It flows from a deep belief in the role of nonprofit organizations in identifying solutions and finding common ground and an unwavering commitment to the communities and people we serve.
As part of strategic planning, Vermont Afterschool identified advocacy as a critical area where there was a need for greater engagement in the state and that the organization was well positioned to catalyze this engagement. The board built a growing advocacy focus into the organization's strategic plan. They first put the basics in place, including training on advocacy versus lobbying and modifying the financial plan to bring in more unrestricted dollars to support advocacy efforts.
We call upon those boards and board members who are not yet standing for their missions through board advocacy to have a discussion about how to get started.
